Dendrobium ellipsophyllum, also called as The Oval-Leafed Dendrobium, Distichorchis ellipsophylla, is a species of the genus Dendrobium. This species was described by T. Tang & F.T. Wang in 1951.
IDENTIFY DENDROBIUM ELLIPSOPHYLLUM
Dendrobium ellipsophyllum is widely distributed in most areas of Southeast Asia. These plants are found near Moulmein (Myanmar), in most areas of Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, the Dalat region of Vietnam and the Yunnan Province in southwestern China. In Thailand, they were encountered at heights of 300-1000 m.
It is a medium sized, warm to hot growing epiphyte, which can reach a height of 30-50 cm, with cane-like, ridged, 30-50 cm long pseudobulbs carrying 14 to 18, bilobed, elliptic, distichous, twisted, 3-4 cm in length leaves all facing in one direction.
The Oval-Leafed Dendrobium blooms in the spring and summer on a short, single flowered inflorescence arising opposite the leaves near the apex of the canes and has fragrant flowers. The flower is 2 cm in diameter. The white snow flakes of both whorls are bent backwards. The gold lip has 3 reddish-brown, oblong bands and is unrolled along its length.
DENDROBIUM ELLIPSOPHYLLUM CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Dendrobium ellipsophyllum needs a light level of 18000-25000 lux. It is recommended to use scattered light and avoid direct sunlight.
Temperature:
This species can tolerate both summer heat and cold winters. The average temperature of the summer day is 29-30 ° C, night 20 ° C, giving a daily difference of 8-10 ° C. In spring, the average day temperature is 31-33 ° C, the night 15-10 ° C, giving a daily difference of 11-16 ° C. In winter, the average day temperature is 26-29 ° C, night 8-11 ° C, giving a daily difference of 16-18 ° C.
Humidity:
This plant needs an average humidity of 75-80% from late spring to autumn, and falls to 60% in winter and early spring.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
The Oval-Leafed Dendrobium can be grown on tree rootstocks or cork, with high humidity and watering in summer at least once a day. When growing in pots, any loose, quickly drying ground can be used. You can repotted at any time as soon as new roots grow.
Watering:
Watering is moderate to heavy in late spring and summer, but in winter the amount drops significantly. Dendrobium ellipsophyllum require abundant watering in the growing season, with only a slight drying between watering. When new growths reach maturity in autumn, the amount of water should be gradually reduced.
Fertilizer:
It is recommended to apply a 1/4-1/2 dose of orchid fertilizer weekly. From spring to mid-summer, high-nitrogen fertilizer should be used, and then until the end of autumn high-phosphoric fertilizer.
Rest period:
In the period of 3-5 winter months, the amount of water should be reduced and allow the plants to dry completely between watering. However, Dendrobium ellipsophyllum should not remain completely dry for too long. Occasional morning fogging between waterings will protect the plants from excessive drying. Fertilization should be eliminated until spring, when the amount of water increases when watering.
