IDENTIFY DENDROBIUM DICHAEOIDES
Dendrobium dichaeoides is native to North Papua New Guinea. These plants are found in mountain forests at the altitudes of 1500-2500 m. They usually grow on mossy branches of large trees. In Irian Jaya (western New Guinea) plants were harvested in the Jabi Mountains stretching along the southern coast of Geelvink Bay near Wape and in the Arfak Range near Angi Lake at an altitude of approximately 1900 m.
It is a miniature species, cool to cold growing, pendulous epiphyte, which reaching 2-5 cm in height, with soft, slender, erect to pendulous, 3-12 cm long stems carrying many, tiny, distichous, bluish green at right angles to the stem, 1.0-1.3 cm long, closely set leaves that all face in one direction and closely set and overlapping.
The Dichaea-like Dendrobium blooms from late fall through spring on an axillary, short, pendant, densly many flowered, racemose inflorescence that arise from the apex of the leafless cane occurring with 6 to 10, longlasting flowers. The flowers are 0.6 cm in diameter. Their color is bright pink-purple. Narrow flowers resemble a dangling fan. The upper oval is oval, lanceolate. Lateral sepals with pointed tips, slightly curved back. Petioles along the edge with small denticles, pointed at the tips. The lip is concave.
DENDROBIUM DICHAEOIDES CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Dendrobium dichaeoides needs a light level of 15000-25000 lux. This species requires a delicate balance between air movement, humidity and drying.
Temperature:
The average temperature of the day throughout the year is 22-24 ° C, night 11-13 ° C, giving a daily difference of 10-12 ° C.
Humidity:
In almost the entire year, The Dichaea-like Dendrobium needs the humidity of 70-75%, but at the end of winter and at the beginning of spring it drops to 65%.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
Dendrobium dichaeoides can be grown mounted on tree-fern rootstocks or cork, and we should provide high humidity and watering in summer at least once a day. When growing in pots, any loose, quickly drying ground can be used. Repotting is best done at the beginning of spring, after flowering, when new roots begin to grow.
Watering:
Water is moderate to heavy for most of the year, but during the 3 months of winter, the conditions are slightly drier. The plants should be constantly moist. During the summer, in the period of hot, dry weather, you may need daily watering, and morning fogging may be beneficial, especially in sunny weather.
Fertilizer:
Weekly or every 2 weeks use of a 1/4 dose of orchid fertilizer is recommended throughout the year. They require little or no fertilization when grown in live sphagnum. With any other substrate, the fertilization should be small doses.
Rest period:
In winter, the amount of water should be reduced, especially for Dendrobium dichaeoides grown in dark, short days at moderate latitudes, but they can never dry up completely. Fertilization should be reduced or eliminated until spring, when the amount of water increases.
