Dendrobium antennatum care and culture

Dendrobium antennatum is native to New Guinea and the surrounding islands. This orchid often occurs in lowland wetlands and in coastal forests along the entire southern and western coast of New Guinea. It grows at an altitude of 1200 m above sea level, most often at a height of about 150 m. This species also grows on the Solomon Islands and the Cape York peninsula in Australia at altitudes of about 1050 m. There, they can be found in high-lighted areas humidity, in mountain valleys near waterfalls.

 Dendrobium antennatum, also called as The Antennae Dendrobium, Antelope Orchid, The Green Antelope Orchid, Callista antennata, Ceratobium antennatum, Ceratobium dalbertisii, Dendrobium d'albertissi, is a species of the genus Dendrobium. This species was described by Lindley in 1843.

IDENTIFY DENDROBIUM ANTENNATUM

 Dendrobium antennatum is native to New Guinea and surrounding islands. These plants are often found in lowland marshy areas and in coastal forests along the whole north and west coast of New Guinea. They can be found at altitudes from sea level up to 1200 m, but most often grow at heights of about 150 m. This orchid also occurs on the Solomon Islands and Australia at the McIlwraith Department in the north of the Cape York Peninsula, at an altitude of about 1050 m. It is found on bright high humidity stations. They are often found in mountain valleys near waterfalls and rock steps, where the rocky terrain causes the forest cover to be broken.

 It is a small to large sized, 20-130 cm in height, hot to cool growing species has erect, cylindrical, cane-like, basally swollen, 20-130 cm long pseudobulbs with coriaceous, narrow, leathery to succulent, lanceolate leaves.

 The Antennae Dendrobium blooms in the summer months from a lax, to 10" (25 cm) long, 3 to 15 flowered inflorescence that may be stiff, horizontal or curved and arises from nodes near the apex of the pseudobulb. The flowers are 4-5 cm in diameter, they are fragrant and last up to 6 months. The pale green petals of the inner whorl are oblong, stiffly straight, 5-8 cm long and gently twisted. The outer whorls are usually white or in a pale greenish-white shade. Sometimes they have a yellow color at the apexes. The large, white lip has a sharp tip, is slightly wavy and has purple or purple veins on the side plots.

 The Antennae Dendrobium needs a humidity of 80% throughout the year.

Substrate, growing media and repotting:

 Dendrobium antennatum can be grown mounted on tree ferns or cork, if we can provide high humidity and watering at least once a day during the summer. This plant can also grow in pots filled with loose, quickly drying ground. Repotting should be carried out every year and at least every two years.

Watering:

 Water is abundant throughout the year, with the highest amount being in the summer and beginning of autumn. Cultivated plants should be constantly moist, but not soaked.

 It is recommended to fertilize every week or every two weeks 1/4-1/2 doses of fertilizer for orchids. Balanced fertilizer should be used all year round.

Rest period:

 Watering and fertilizing plants should be slightly reduced in the winter, especially if they are grown in dark, short days at moderate latitudes. Plants can never completely dry between waterings.
