Dendrobium acinaciforme care and culture

It is a small to just medium sized, warm to cold growing epiphyte, which reaching 18-33 cm, with tightly clustered, slightly zigzag, slender, 15-30 cm long stems carrying 8 to 12, narrow, pointed, distichous, succulent, 3.8-5.0 cm long, curved, set at an angle of 45 ° relative to the momentum leaves.

The petals of both whorls are white to greenish yellow. They are variable as to the color and detail of the lip. They can be intensely purple and have a distinct claw at the tip of the lip, or they can have a little purple color and a more yellow lip without a claw on the lip. Light:

Temperature:

The average temperature of the summer day is 23-25 ° C, the night 16-17 ° C, and the daily difference is 7-9 ° C. In spring, the average temperature of the day is 27-28 ° C, the night 10-16 ° C, and the daily difference is 11-18 ° C. The average temperature of the winter day is 22-25 ° C, the night 6-7 ° C, and the daily difference is 15-18 ° C.

Humidity:

The Saber-Shaped Dendrobium needs an average humidity of 75-85% from late spring to late autumn, but at the end of winter and at the beginning of spring the humidity drops to almost 60%.

Substrate, growing media and repotting:

Dendrobium acinaciforme can be mounted on pieces of tree fern or cork, as long as we can ensure high humidity and watering at least once a day during the summer. When growing in pots, use shallow, possibly small pots filled with any loose, quickly drying ground. Repotting is best done in early spring, immediately after flowering.

Watering:

This species should be constantly moist during active growth (from late spring until the beginning of autumn), but when new growths reach maturity in autumn, the amount of water should be gradually reduced.

Fertilizer:

It is recommended to apply a 1/4-1/2 dose of orchid fertilizer weekly. From spring to mid-summer, high-nitrogen fertilizer should be used, and then until the end of autumn high-phosphoric fertilizer.

Rest period:

The cold, dry rest of the Dendrobium acinaciforme is very important and should last until the appearance of new increments. The plant will be in better condition if during most of the winter they will be a bit dry between watering, but they can not stay dry for too long. However, at the end of winter, for 1-2 months, the plants should dry completely between waterings and remain dry for a little longer. Occasional morning fogging between watering will help protect the plant from excessive drying. Fertilization should be significantly reduced or eliminated until spring, when watering increases.
