The Cold Growing Cymbidium is native to China, Taiwan, Japan and Ryukyu Islands. In China, this orchid is found in the provinces of Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian, Hunan, Guangdong, Hainan, Guangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou and Yunnan. Usually it is found in light shade in damp, rocky soil, in forests or along ravines at altitudes of 400-2400 m. In Taiwan it is found in deciduous forests, at heights of 800-1400 m, usually in areas with strong winds, in the vicinity edge on the south-eastern slopes. In Japan, he was found on the islands of Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku, but details of the exact location and altitude of natural habitats could not be determined. In the Ryukyu Islands, it is found in many places in Okinawa, most of which were probably protected from agricultural activity.

Cymbidium kanran orchid, also called as The Cold Growing Cymbidium, is a species of the genus Cymbidium. It was first described by Makino in 1902. Several synonyms are know for this species such as: "Cymbidium kanran f. purpurascens Makino 1902"; "Cymbidium kanran var. purpureo-hiemale (Hayata) S.S.Ying 1977"; "Cymbidium linearisepalum Yamam. 1930"; "Cymbidium linearisepalum f. atropurpureum Yamam. 1932"; "Cymbidium linearisepalum f. atrovirens Yamam. 1930"; "Cymbidium linearisepalum var. atropurpureum (Yamam.)  This plant is a medium to large sized, cold to cool growing terrestrial species with large, cylindrical roots, the diameter of which reaches even 0.5 - 0.7 cm. It has narrowly ovoid, often conspicuous pseudobulbs (2-4 cm long and 1.0-1.5 cm thick) enveloped by scarious cataphylls and broad sheathing bases carrying 3 to 5, linear to linear-elliptic, acumite, arching, dark green, shining leaves (40-70 cm long and 0.9-1.7 cm wide) that often have serrulate margins towards the apex.

It blooms on a basal, erect, 20" (50 cm) long, many (more than 10) flowered, racemose inflorescence (25-60 cm long) with the strongly scented flowers held above the leaves occuring in the winter. The flower, 8-9 cm in diameter, are variable in color. Petals and sepals are usually olive-green, but can be from apple-green to green with a brownish-red hue. The lip, as a rule, is light yellow with red spots. Sepals are narrow, oblong-lanceolate, with sharp tips. Petals are much shorter, from narrow-triangular to lanceolate. Lip large, ovate, its sharp tip curved back.

Light:

About 20000-30000 lux. The light should be filtered or diffused, and the plant should not be exposed to the direct sunlight of the midday sun. Strong air movement should be ensured all the time.

Temperature:

The average temperature of the summer day is 26-27 ° C, the night 18-19 ° C, and the daily difference is 7-9 ° C. In spring, at the end of the dry season, the average day temperature is then 23-28 ° C, the night 8-16 ° C, and the daily difference decreases from 16 to 13 ° C. A large difference in habitat height indicates that these plants should adapt to temperatures of 3-4 ° C higher or lower than those given in the climate table.

In nature, these plants are able to withstand short-term temperature drops below 0 ° C. However, those grown for sure will be healthier if they do not experience such extreme conditions.

Humidity:

In summer and early autumn, the average humidity is 75-85%, then gradually decreases to almost 55% in the spring and again sharply increases at the beginning of the summer monsoon season.

Substrate and growing medium:

Cymbidium kanran is grown, as a rule, in high pots with good drainage, filled with a loose, rapidly drying substrate, which would not soak even with frequent watering. Most growers use a mixture based on bark or chopped woody tree ferns. Typically, various amounts of sphagnum moss cut, roots of osmunda fern, sand, perlite, charcoal and fibrous clay are also added; many growers use small to medium bark with no additives. The average granulation of the bark in the lower half of the pot and in the upper fine bark with the addition of about 10% pearlite and 10% charcoal works perfectly.

Watering:

Cultivated plants should be abundantly watered during active growth, but excellent drainage should be ensured, and the ground around the roots should never be soggy or damp. When new growths reach maturity in autumn, the amount of water should be gradually reduced.

In the winter and early spring, rainfall in the habitats in China is low. For most of this period, a little extra moisture provides a lot of dew and night drizzle. At the end of the dry season, at the beginning of spring, for a few months it is so dry, that there may even be no dew. In winter, the amount of water should be limited to plants, and then it should be reduced even more at the beginning of spring. As a regular, morning fogging between rare watering in winter should provide enough moisture for plants. However, for a period of about one month at the beginning of spring the amount of water should be reduced to occasional fogging between occasional watering.

Fertilizer:

Cymbidium requires strong fertilization, which is why many breeders add old horse manure or other forms of solid fertilizers to supplement the usual fertilization program. It is recommended to apply a 1/4-1/2 dose of fertilizer for orchids every week in the growing season. Fertilization should be eliminated until new growths appear in the spring and start of more abundant watering.

Repotting:

Cymbidium kanran orchid usually need repot every two years or more often if they grow out of the pot, or when the substrate breaks down. Repotting is best done at the end of winter, when new roots begin to grow, provided that the plant does not have a flower shoot. In this case, repotting is carried out immediately after flowering, but then you should pay special attention not to break new, brittle roots.
