IDENTIFY AERANGIS CRYPTODON ORCHID
Aerangis cryptodon is native to Madagascar. This orchid is found in the mountains of Ankarara south of Antananorivo and near Fianarantsoa and Toamasina. They grow in damp, evergreen forests and on the rocky slopes of basalt hills, at heights of 200-1800 m.
It is a small sized, hot to warm growing epiphyte or lithophyte with a short stem. These plants produce many roots with a diameter of up to 0.6 cm. The roots grow out of momentum and branching. The leaves are 7-12 cm long and 1.6-2.5 cm wide. Numerous, narrow-oval to longitudinal leaves are moderately fleshy, pointed and double-row on the shoot. They diagonally rise upward, and their lateral obliquities curl upwards, so that in cross section they give a wide letter V. Aerangis cryptodon usually has shorter leaves than Aerangis ellisii.
The Aerangis with the Hidden Tooth blooms in the fall and winter on an arching to pendulous, to 12 to 16" (30 to 40 cm) long, 8 to 20 flowered, racemose inflorescence with a red brown rachis, brown scarious floral bracts. The flowers are white, waxy, fragrant, durable, with a long, slender crochet-shaped spur, which is twisted and can be up to 18 cm long. The flakes of both whorls are similar to each other, they are 2 cm long and 0.7 cm wide. They are usually slightly longer and not as closely focused as in Aerangis ellisii.
AERANGIS CRYPTODON CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Aerangis cryptodon needs a light level of 15000-23000 lux. These plants grow well in bright light. However, they should be protected from the direct sun. Strong air movement should be ensured all the time.
Temperature:
It is a thermophilic plant. In summer the average day temperature is 28-29 ° C, night 18 ° C, which gives a daily difference of 9-11 ° C. The average winter temperature is 22-23 ° C during the day and 11-12 ° C at night, giving a diurnal difference of 11-12 ° C.
Humidity:
The Aerangis with the Hidden Tooth needs a humidity level of about 75-80% for most of the year. For 4 months of late winter and spring the humidity drops to about 65-70%.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
Plants can be grown in shallow containers with good drainage or on tree rootstocks and should be watered several times a day. You can also grow it in shallow pots or baskets with a fast drying substrate such as moss sphagnum or coconut fiber with the addition of coarse pearlite and / or chopped sphagnum moss, which simultaneously increases the permeability of the substrate and enables the retention of moisture. The addition of charcoal helps to ensure permeability and prevents soda.
Plants should be repotted when the substrate begins to decompose or grow out of the pots. It's best to do it when new roots start growing. This will allow the plant to adapt to the new substrate in the shortest possible time.
Watering:
Aerangis cryptodon should be watered strongly during the period of active growth (from late spring to autumn), but the roots must always dry quickly after watering.
Fertilizer:
During the active growth of the plants should be fertilized every week 1/4-1/2 of the recommended dose of fertilizer for orchids. You can also use fertilizer with an increased nitrogen content from spring to mid summer, and then, in late summer and autumn, begin to use a fertilizer with a higher content of phosphorus.
Rest period:
From late autumn and throughout the winter, Aerangis cryptodon need less water, but it needs to be supplied regularly to prevent excessive drying. In general, occasional fogging in the early morning between rare watering is sufficient. However, the amount of water supplied should be increased if the leaves wrinkle or show signs of weakness. Fertilization should be eliminated until new growths appear and more watering begins in the spring.
