Sedum acre - Gold moss Sedum care and culture

Sedum acre also called as Gold moss Sedum, goldmoss stonecrop, mossy stonecrop, biting stonecrop, wallpepper, is a species of the genus Sedum. It is a good, strong grower for outdoor ground cover. It has tiny leaves of bright lime to golden green. As it spreads it forms a dense mat and does well planted in small, rocky crevices.

 Sedum acre also called as Gold moss Sedum, goldmoss stonecrop, mossy stonecrop, biting stonecrop, wallpepper, is a species of the genus Sedum. It is a good, strong grower for outdoor ground cover.  Sedum acre is native to northern Africa (i.e. Algeria, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia), Europe (i.e. Austria, Czechoslovakia, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Switzerland, Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, Romania, Yugoslavia, France, Portugal and Spain) western Asia (i.e. Turkey) and Russia. It inhabits rocks, shingle, sandy areas, gravelly seashores, meadows, dry-stone walls, roadsides, wasteland.

 Gold moss Sedum is a perennial, herbaceous plant growing from 5 to 15cm, with small, sessile, oval, light green leaves and star-shaped, yellow flowers. The plant has a peppery taste. The flowering lasts from June to July and the fruiting takes place from July to August.

 Some cultivars:

  •  Sedum acre "Aureum" - this creeping sedum is a great variety for groundcover. During the early to midsummer this sedum will bloom little star-shaped golden flowers.

  •  Sedum acre "Gold Carpet" - this variety forms a thick, golden carpet of evergreen foliage. Tiny, golden yellow flowers blanket the carpet in midsummer. May become invasive.

  •  Sedum acre "Golden Queen" - great for container planting. This sedum grows in clusters with various stems sprouting. A sedum that enjoys a little less sun. Can grow up to a height of 6".

  •  Sedum acre "Oktoberfest" - fast-spreading evergreen that forms a rich carpet of succulent green leaves, smothered by starshaped creamy white or yellow flowers in summer. Fast growing and easy to propagate. Tolerates moderate foot traffic.

 Sedum acre grow bet in full sun but it have good tolerance for light shade. It can tolerates more sunlight than many other plants.

Temperature:

 Gold moss Sedum tolerates varying temperatures, and why it grows in areas many plants cannot. It is useful in gardens in USDA zones 3 to 8. It can tolerate the temperature -30° to -20°F (-34° to -29°C).

Substrate and growing media:

 Biting stonecrop prefers slightly acidic sites with excellent drainage and gritty soil. Even shallow soil, limestone, rocks, gravel, sand, dry and hot locations pose no problem for this plant.

Watering:

 Sedum acre like other members of its genus in general - stores water in its leaves and is called a succulent. The species has adapted to dry habitats with the aid of a structure that stores water and reduces evaporation. It can thrive in unbelievably thin soils and can survive up to half a year without water.

Fertilizer:

 It does not require frequent feeding, as it is a self-fertile plant.

Pruning:

 Gold moss Sedum requires minimum grooming and maintenance. It grows well when left on its own and tolerates difficult conditions. It stays in leaf all year around.

Propagation:

 It tends to be self-seeding and will expand season by season into a dense mat of succulent foliage. If you wish to start new plants, simply break off a stem and stick it into soil. The stem will quickly root. Water new plants for the first few months as they establish. Mature plants can tolerate drought conditions for brief periods.
