Oncidium Twinkle orchid hybrid plant care and culture

Although cheirophorum is a pure yellow Oncidium and ornithorhynchum is generally seen in shades of pink, Oncidium Twinkle has produced a range of colors from white to red. Depending on the version of color distinguish: Oncidium Twinkle 'White Fantasy' - white flowers; Oncidium Twinkle 'Fragrance Fantasy' - pale yellow flowers; Oncidium Twinkle 'Red Fantasy' - pale pink flowers.

Oncidium Twinkle is a cross between Oncidium cheirophorum and Oncidium ornithorhynchum. This orchid hybrid is credited to William Whitmore Goodale Moir in 1958.

IDENTIFY ONCIDIUM TWINKLE ORCHID PLANT

Oncidium Twinkle are easy to grow, compact growth, profuse flowering, relatively disease free, and in a range of colors. This hybrid can bloom at any time of the year, especially preferring the autumn period. Duration of flowering at least one month. The size of flowers is about 1.5 cm.

ONCIDIUM TWINKLE ORCHID PLANT CARE AND CULTURE

Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.

Light:

Oncidium Twinkle is grown both in bright diffused light and in partial shade. The ideal location is considered to be the windows of the east orientation, however, if there are none in the apartment, then you can use the western or very bright northern windows. This hybrid equally does not like, as too dark place (here the orchid simply will not bloom), and too light (orchid leaves can burn). If western or southern windows were chosen as a plant location, then from May to early September, the orchid should be protected from the effects of too bright day and evening sun - placed behind a curtain (for example, on a table near the window) or in the shade of other plants.

Temperature:

This hybrid belongs to a moderate temperature regime, however, it can calmly adapt to both warmer and colder temperatures. Throughout the year it is recommended to keep the plants under the following conditions: Summer temperature at 20-24 ° C (not higher than 32 ° C) during the day and about 18 ° C at night; Winter temperature at 18 ° C during the day and 14-15 ° C at night. For successful cultivation at home, it is necessary that the night temperature of the content is always 2-4 ° C lower than the day.

Humidity:

Oncidium Twinkle need the humidity of 40 to 60%. Too dry air has a negative impact on the overall development of the plant - its growth slows down, forming a consequence of deformation in the form of a jammed growth "accordion". The higher temperature, the higher the humidity should be, and the higher the humidity, the more often and longer it is necessary to ventilate the room where orchids are contained, otherwise there is a high probability of rotting and leaves of various kinds of fungal diseases.

Substrate, growing media and repotting:

Oncidium Twinkle is grown both in the substrate (in ordinary plastic pots) and without it (placed on the blocks). A mixture of bark of coniferous trees with peat and a small fraction of sphagnum moss (10-15%) is best suited as a substrate. When growing orchids on blocks to prevent rapid drying of the root system of a plant, it is recommended to make a small layer of moss between it and the block. On top of the roots, you can also put live or dry sphagnum.

Frequent transplants for this hybrid are not required, therefore, it is desirable to transplant only in cases of strong salinization of the substrate, critically low or high pH, or when the plant grows very strongly and the old pot becomes cramped. The best time for transplanting is the period when new sprouts reach a size of 5 cm and begin to grow their own roots.

Watering:

Watering this hybrid is directly dependent on the temperature of the content, the higher it is, the more often it needs to be watered. Excess water during irrigation must flow out of the pot, as stagnation of water both inside the pot and in its pan can very quickly lead to rotting of the roots and the lower part of the plant. The damaged root system is not able to suck up water and transport it further into the plant, the leaves and pseudobulbs of orchids start to wither from lack of moisture and the plant slowly dies. Substratum between waterings should be well out.

Fertilizer:

Throughout the year, this hybrid is fertilized for every third watering in the usual concentration of fertilizer indicated on the package. At the beginning of the new growth period (vegetation), it is desirable to use fertilizer with a higher nitrogen content, and closer to the formation of pseudobulb - with fertilizer with a higher phosphorus content. The process of feeding the plant is the following - in a bowl or bucket with water, Pour the required amount of fertilizer and put a pot with an orchid for 20-30 minutes. In order to avoid burning the root system of a plant, it is advisable to use filtered or plain water well diluted with distilled water (in a 1: 1 ratio).

Rest period:

According to the natural features in the homeland of the parents of this hybrid, in the winter, Oncidium Twinkle undergoes a short period of rest when the orchid is kept at a temperature not higher than 18 ° C during the day and about 14-15 ° C at night and is watered a little less. Watering orchids should be organized in such a way that between waterings the substrate not only dries well, but also remains completely dry for 1-2 days. At the beginning of March, the dormant period ends: the total temperature of the maintenance rises, and the watering of the orchid is resumed in the usual amount.
