Maxillaria longissima also called as The Longest Petal Maxillaria, is a species of the genus Maxillaria. This species was described by John Lindley in 1846.
IDENTIFY MAXILLARIA LONGISSIMA ORCHID PLANT
Maxillaria longissima is found in Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador. It grows epiphyte at elevations around 1350 to 2600 meters.
It is a medium sized, warm to cool growing, bracteate, unifoliate epiphyte with the 2-3 cm long pseudobulb enveloped by leaf sheaths that higher up carry linear-lanceolate leaves and a single, apical, linear-lanceolate, up to 25 cm long leaf.
The Longest Petal Maxillaria blooms on a longer, basal, bracteate, single flowered inflorescence arising on a newly maturing pseudobulb holding the flowers amid or above the leaves. The flowers are 5 cm in diameter.
MAXILLARIA LONGISSIMA ORCHID PLANT CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Maxillaria longissima needs a light level of 20000-30000 lux. The direct sun must be shielded. The ideal photoperiod is 12 hours.
Temperature:
In summer the ideal temperature is 24-25 ° C during the day and 14-15 ° C at night. In winter the temperature is 22-23 ° C during the day and 12-13 ° C at night.
Humidity:
The Longest Petal Maxillaria needs the average humidity of 80-85% throughout the year.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
Maxillaria longissima can be grown either in pot (medium-sized bark as substrate) or mounted on a raft. This species does not like excessive moisture around the roots. It is repotted every 2-3 years, when the substrate begins to decompose.
Watering:
During the growing period this species is frequently watered, as soon as the substrate has dried well (but before it becomes completely dry).
Fertilizer:
It is fertilized with 1/4 of the dose reported on the bottle of a special liquid manure for the orchids, adding it to the watering water. The fertilizations take place every 10 days during the growth period. In rest period the fertilizations should eliminated.
Rest period:
If we want to see this species grow well, we will have to respect its rest period which begins in December and ends in March. The watering is reduced to allow the plant to remain dry for 2 days between waterings. The fertilizer is completely eliminated; temperatures must be 22-23 ° C during the day and 12-13 ° C at night. If the plant starts to show signs of stress (pseudobulbs shrivel), the frequency of watering should be increased a little. The rest period ends in mid-March, when the orchid starts its growth again.
