Aganisia pulchella is native to Trinidad, French Guiana, Suriname, Guyana, Venezuela, Brazil. It grows predominantly epiphytic on trees (only in Venezuela), lithophyte on rocks, growing along waterfalls, at an altitude of 0 to 400 meters above sea level.

It is a creeping, small sized, hot growing epiphyte or terrestrial with 5 to 10 cm between each narrowly fusiform, long attenuate to towards the apex, about 3 cm in length and about 0.5 cm in width pseudobulbs enveloped completely by membrenaceous sheaths and carrying a single, plicate, 5 nerved, oblong, oblong-lanceolate, to elliptic, acuminate, attenuate below into the channeled, petiolate base, up to 15 cm long and a 4 cm wide leaf.

The Beautiful Aganisia blooms in the spring on an erect, racemose, somewhat flexuous, laxly 3 to 8 flowered, 65 to 15 cm long inflorescence arising on a mature pseudobulb with a few basal, membrenaceous, acute bracts and triangular-ovate, acute, membrenaceous, floral bracts and carrying showy, fragrant or not flowers. The flowers are creamy-white, about 3 cm in diameter. The upper sepal of a narrowed oval shape, pointed at the tip, measuring 2.5 cm long and 1 cm wide, and the lateral ones somewhat skewed. Petals are shorter than the sepals, measuring 1.8 cm in length and 0.9 cm in width. Lip fused with the column, at the base has a growth of wine color, and the front part is triple, in the middle yellow, at the edge of the white, pointed at the tip, 1.1 cm long and 1.4 cm wide. The column is straight, fairly thick, slightly curved from the front, has small (0.25 cm) side wings.

AGANISIA PULCHELLA ORCHID PLANT CARE AND CULTURE

Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.

Light:

Aganisia pulchella can grow in bright scattered light. Oriental orientation windows are considered to be the ideal location, however, if there are none in the apartment, you can use western or very bright northern windows. If the western or southern windows were chosen for the location of the plant, then during the period from May to early September, the orchid should be protected from the influence of too bright day and evening sun - put behind a curtain (for example, on a table near a window) or into the shade of other plants.

Temperature:

This kind of orchid refers to a warm temperature regime, and it is recommended to keep the orchids under the following conditions throughout the year: Day temperature at 25-32 ° C; Night temperature is not below 22 ° C. For successful cultivation at home, it is necessary that the night temperature of the content is always at least 4 ° C lower than the daytime (and ideal 10 ° C).

Humidity:

The Beautiful Aganisia needs the average humidity of 70-80%. In conditions of high humidity, it is necessary to regularly ventilate the room where the plants are kept, since wet, stale air is an ideal medium for the mass reproduction of various fungal and bacterial diseases.

Substrate, growing media and repotting:

Aganisia pulchella can be grow in pots and hanging lattice baskets and placed on blocks. As a substrate, a mixture of a large bark of coniferous trees with charcoal, perlite and sphagnum moss is best. When growing orchids on blocks to prevent rapid drying of the root system of the plant, it is recommended to make a small interlayer of moss between it and the block. Above the roots, you can also put live or dry sphagnum.

It is recommended to transplant the orchid only when it is really necessary, for example, in cases of severe salinization or condensation of the substrate, at its critically low or high pH (5.5 to 6.5) or , when the plant grows very much, and the pot will become too small for it (new pseudobulbs will begin to hang from the sides of the pot).

Watering:

Watering this kind of orchids directly depends on the overall temperature of the content, the higher it is, the more often and abundant it is necessary to water. Plants growing on blocks should be watered daily in the morning, so that by evening their roots could dry out relatively well. When watering orchids in pots, it is necessary to remember that excess water during watering should flow freely out of the pot, as the stagnation of water both inside the pot and in its pallet can very quickly lead to rotting of the roots and the lower part of the plant. The substrate between waterings should dry well.

Fertilizer:

During the new growth period, this kind of orchids is fertilized for every third watering in 1/4 of the concentration of fertilizer indicated on the package. In addition to the usual root top dressing, it is also recommended to produce a foliar dressing, when a very much diluted fertilizer is sprayed on the outer part of the plant. It is best to feed the orchid, alternating both these methods. During the whole year (especially at the beginning of the growing season) it is recommended to use a balanced fertilizer with the same proportion of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, for example, NPK = 3-3-3 or 8-8-8. If you do not have such a fertilizer, then at the beginning of the growing season (the emergence of new shoots), feed the orchid with a fertilizer with a high nitrogen content, and when the sprout reaches 1/2 of its normal growth - fertilizer with a higher content of phosphorus. To avoid the rapid salinization of the substrate, once a month, it is necessary to rinse it.

Rest period:

In their natural habitats, during the period from July to October, Aganisia pulchella undergo a hot and dry period of dormancy, however, in a domestic culture, this species does not need this period of rest. Refusal to flowering can be caused by the stressful state of the plant caused by insufficient lighting, regular overheating or a bad root system.
