Trichocentrum morenoi also called as Moreno's Trichocentrum, Lophiaris morenoi, Oncidium morenoi, is a species of the genus Trichocentrum. This species was described by Mark W. Chase & Norris Hagan Williams in 2001.
IDENTIFY TRICHOCENTRUM MORENOI
Trichocentrum morenoi is found in Brazil, Bolivia and Peru. In nature it grows on tree branches in dry tropical forests at an altitude of 200-1000 meters.
It is a small sized, epiphytic, warm to hot growing, mule ear epiphyte with very small, 1-2 cm long pseudobulbs enveloped basally by non foliaceous, dry sheaths carrying a single, apical, erect, fleshy, thick, rigid, gray green with maroon spots, 7 cm long leaf.
Moreno's Trichocentrum blooms in the spring and summer on a stiff, erect, 5 to 9 cm long, panicle with many small, fragrant flowers, densly covering the inflorescence and giving it a conical appearance. The flowers are 6 mm in diameter.
TRICHOCENTRUM MORENOI CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Trichocentrum morenoi needs a light level of 25000-34000 lux. The direct morning sun is tolerated by the specimens that are accustomed to it, but during the hottest hours (11: 00-16: 00) it is better to protect the orchid with a shield. The ideal photoperiod is 12 hours.
Temperature:
In summer the average temperature is 27-28 ° C during the day and 19-20 ° C at night. In winter the average temperature is 22-23 ° C during the day and 14-15 ° C at night.
Humidity:
Moreno's Trichocentrum needs the average humidity of 70-75%.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
Trichocentrum morenoi likes a good airing around the roots, so the best way to place it is on a bare root raft and without sphagnum. Pay attention to the humidity of the air: it must not fall below 70%. Alternatively, it can be grown in a basket using the medium-sized bark (size 2-4 cm) as a substrate.
Watering:
During the growing period this orchid gets water regularly, and it is done as soon as the substratum is completely dry. The orchids on the raft get water daily (2 times a day in the hottest periods), but the roots must dry quickly after watering.
Fertilizer:
It is fertilized once every 4 weeks using 1/4 (1/8 for the plants on a raft) of the dose indicated on the bottle of a suitable liquid fertilizer for orchids. Before fertilizing the orchid it is important to water it to avoid the harmful contact of the fertilizer with the dry roots. During the rest period the plant does not fertilize.
Rest period:
In winter the temperatures drop, the rains are scarce (especially in February) and Trichocentrum morenoi enters the rest period (from December), where it remains until March. During the rest phase instead the orchid must remain dry for 4-5 days between waterings. The watering in this period is replaced by spraying on the substrate surface, for the potted specimens. For those on raft vaporize once every 2-3 days. If the plant begins to show signs of stress (the leaves lose their turgidity), it is necessary to increase the frequency of watering / the amount of water.
