Parodia buiningii also called as Notocactus buiningii, is a species of the genus Parodia. This species was described by Nigel Paul Taylor in 1987.
IDENTIFY PARODIA BUININGII
Parodia buiningii occurs in Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul) and Uruguay (Salto, Artigas and Rivera), at elevations from 150 to 300 m above sea level. This species grows on rocky outcrops in grasslands or pampas.
It is a solitary spherical or oblate cactus only a few inches in height with single, flattened or oblate-spherical to spherical, with an unheeded apex, with a height of up to 8 cm and a diameter of 12 cm stem and has about 16 ribs, which are pronounced, straight, sharp, up to 2 cm high, with narrow tubercles between the areoles. The areoles are drowned between tubercles, initially woolly, but as they grow older they lose their wool. The 4 central spines are straight, stiff, cross-shaped, yellowish to straw color, brown at the base, 2-3 cm long.
This cactus blooms in summer with shiny, light-yellow with a prominent red-violet stigma of the pistil flowers. The pericarp and the flower tube are covered with thick dark brown or light brown wool. Its produces stretched at the base, up to 3 cm long, covered with wool fruits and helmet-form, up to 1.4 mm. length, finely lumpy, matte, black seeds.
PARODIA BUININGII CARE AND CULTURE

Light:
Parodia buiningii needs to grown in full sun, but on the hottest summer days the plant needs to be slightly shaded from scorching sun rays.
Temperature:
This cactus prefers coolness, can tolerate light frosts.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
This cactus has a relatively small root system, so it is better to plant it in shallow pots with a neutral or slightly acidic substrate, in which a large amount of gravel is added.
Watering:
In summer the watering is regular, in winter the cactus is watered rarely, so that the roots of the plant do not dry out, since the plant tends to lose them in the winter. However, you need to be careful, as in a wet and cold substrate cactus easily rot.

Cactus seedlings are very fragile on the first weeks and survival depends on how they are treated on that crucial stage; out of 100 of seeds in the wild only a few survive to an adult plant to produce seeds and start the cycle again. Obtaining a high percentage of adult plants from a batch of seedlings, depends on how each collector takes care of their seedlings.
Water for seedlings is the most important item to keep them growing for first few weeks. Generally, most seedlings, which are 1 week old will die after 3 days of dryness. 2 month-old seedlings can survive for 1 week if allowed to dry. 6 month-old seedlings can survive for 2 months if allowed to dry. 1 year-old seedlings can survive for 5 months if allowed to dry.
Planting instructions for 4”pot kit: First, clean with water and chlorine plastic pot, clear cover and label and wash with fresh water. Second, the soil can be sterilized for 2 hours at 120º C in an oven or a microwave but can be used without sterilization. Third, fill the pot with soil and spray with distilled, reverse osmosis or pure rainwater to let soil flatten at the top. Fourth, place to 1/8 to 1/4 inch layer of Dyna Rock or crushed sea shell extra fine on top to cover the soil making a layer between soil and seeds. Fifth, place seeds over the Dyna Rock and fine spray water the seeds well and cover with a clearcover.
