IDENTIFY PARODIA ALACRIPORTANA

Parodia alacriportana is endemic to Brazil, occurring in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. It grows in rocky outcrops in grasslands, and is tolerant to humidity at elevations of 800 to 1400 meters above sea level.

It is a variable in size terrestrial with globose to short-cylindrical, up to 8 cm in diameter or larger, dark green to olive-brownish, usually single, but can sometimes branch stem and 15-29 or more, more or less vertical, divided into tubercles ribs. The areoles can be separated from each other by a distance of up to 25 mm, but are usually located closer. The spines are brownish, orange, yellow or white, later become gray, intertwined with thorns of neighboring edges. The radial spines up to 22, bristly, spreading, vitreous to yellow, up to 8 mm long with 4 to 10 central spines.

This cactus blooms with golden yellow, 26-40 mm in length, 35-40 mm in diameter flowers. It produces 8-10 mm wide, woolly fruits and helmet-shaped, about 1 mm wide, black, very tuberculate seeds.

PARODIA ALACRIPORTANA CARE AND CULTURE

Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.

Light:

Parodia alacriportana needs a lot of sun, under poor lighting, it experiences stress, which is expressed in poor growth and unnatural form.

Temperature:

It is a thermophilic plant. The minimum temperature in winter is 5 ° C, although if the cactus is kept in dry conditions, it can withstand -5 ° C. However, these negative temperatures should be avoided.

Substrate, growing media and repotting:

Parodia alacriportana is grown in sandy-gravel cactus soil. The pot must be relatively shallow to accommodate the fungal roots of the plant. Good drainage is required. A cactus can grow in a pot without repotting for many years.

Watering:

In summer the watering is moderate, the wintering is completely dry. Adult specimens of this species easily rot and die, especially after transplantation, so you should water the plant with extreme caution. When night temperatures drop to 10 ° C, this cactus is not watered. If the pot is large, then the water needs less than usual.

Fertilizer:

During the growing season, the plant is fed once with a special fertilizer for cacti and succulents (high in potassium and low in nitrogen), which includes all microelements. Dilute ½ dose indicated on the label.

Rest period:

Wintering is dry and cool. Very good ventilation is necessary if the Parodia alacriportana is contained. Almost all problems arise as a result of over moistening and poor air circulation, especially in overcast, cold and damp weather.

Grow from seeds:

Cactus seedlings are very fragile on the first weeks and survival depends on how they are treated on that crucial stage; out of 100 of seeds in the wild only a few survive to an adult plant to produce seeds and start the cycle again. Obtaining a high percentage of adult plants from a batch of seedlings, depends on how each collector takes care of their seedlings.

Water for seedlings is the most important item to keep them growing for first few weeks. Generally, most seedlings, which are 1 week old will die after 3 days of dryness. 2 month-old seedlings can survive for 1 week if allowed to dry. 6 month-old seedlings can survive for 2 months if allowed to dry. 1 year-old seedlings can survive for 5 months if allowed to dry.

Planting instructions for 4”pot kit: First, clean with water and chlorine plastic pot, clear cover and label and wash with fresh water. Second, the soil can be sterilized for 2 hours at 120º C in an oven or a microwave but can be used without sterilization. Third, fill the pot with soil and spray with distilled, reverse osmosis or pure rainwater to let soil flatten at the top. Fourth, place to 1/8 to 1/4 inch layer of Dyna Rock or crushed sea shell extra fine on top to cover the soil making a layer between soil and seeds. Fifth, place seeds over the Dyna Rock and fine spray water the seeds well and cover with a clearcover.
