Kefersteinia mystacina also called as The Bearded Kefersteinia, Zygopetalum mystacinum, is a species of the genus Kefersteinia. This species was described by Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach in 1881.
IDENTIFY KEFERSTEINIA MYSTACINA
Kefersteinia mystacina is found in Panama, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. Its grow as epiphyte low on the trees in the pre-mountainous and mountainous wet woods at an altitude of 100-1400 meters.
It is a small sized, hot to warm growing epiphyte without pseudobulbs, having narrowly elliptic, acute, gradually narrowing below into the conduplicate base, 12-14 cm in length leaves with imbricating basal, conduplicate sheaths.
The Bearded Kefersteinia blooms in the winter and spring on an erect, 30 cm long, wiry, axillary, single flowered inflorescence holding the flower at mid leaf. The flowers are 4 cm in diameter.
KEFERSTEINIA MYSTACINA CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Kefersteinia mystacina needs a light level of 9000-11000 lux. The highest intensity can cause stains and yellowing of the leaves. The recommended photoperiod is 10-11 hours, even in winter, so you need to install some artificial lighting to prolong the short winter days.
Temperature:
In summer the ideal temperature is 22-26 ° C during the day and 17-18 ° C at night, in winter 20-22 ° C during the day and 16 ° C at night. If the air humidity is high and the plant is well developed, it does not suffer any further degree.
Humidity:
The Bearded Kefersteinia grown in pots are content of 60-65%. Everything changes if the orchid is grown bare root: at least requires 75%, ideal 80-85%. Air humidity is quite critical for the health of Kefersteinia, and can not be missed.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
Kefersteinia mystacina can be grown on a raft, or in a vase. If you decide to assemble it, you need to put several layers of sphagnum between the raft and the roots of the plant. The humidity of air with this type of cultivation must not fall below 75%. If it is lower, the orchid is grown in pots. A mixture of coarse fiber sphagnum and perlite (1: 1 ratio), or of medium-small (2-3 cm) and sphagnum (2: 1) pine bark is used as the substrate. The chosen vase must be transparent: so it is easy to check the conditions of the substrate and roots.
Watering:
This species should never remain completely dry. It gets water as soon as the substrate has dried out well enough, but before it becomes completely dry. To water the plant do not use tap water (unless you are in mountain areas, where tap water is acid), because their roots are very sensitive to excess mineral salts.
Fertilizer:
The cultivated plant is fertilized every 4 watering, using a special liquid fertilizer for orchids. Take 1/4 of the indicated dose on the fertilizer bottle. Keep in mind that before fertilizing an orchid you have to wet it, to avoid contacting the fertilizer with the dry roots, which can cause burns on their surface.
Rest period:
Kefersteinia mystacina does not need any period of rest. It can flourish in any period, preferring the months from May to September.
