Coelogyne usitana is found in the Philippines, where it grows both epiphytes in trees, and lithophyte on rocks at an altitude of about 800 meters above sea level.

Coelogyne usitana orchid plant care and culture

It is a small to medium sized, hot to warm growing epiphyte or lithophyte with close set, narrowly ovoid, 4-angled, ancipitous, 7.5-8 cm long and about 2 cm wide pseudobulbs enveloped basally by 3 to 4 membraneous, narrowly ovoid bracts and carrying a single, apical, broadly elliptical, acute, plicate, 5 to 7 nerved, gradually narrowing below into the short petiolate base, up to 40 cm in length, and about 11 cm wide in width leaf.

Usita's Coelogyne blooms at any time of the year but mostly from spring to summer with an erect to then pendulous, to 30 cm long, fractiflex rachis, successively single, few to 20 flowering, to 55 cm long inflorescence arising on a newly developing pseudobulb with wide spread, downward facing flowers with only a single flower open at any one time. The flowers are from the color of the white-green to the cream-colored with a dark brown, almost black lip, do not have a smell, they are not completely opened, about 10 cm in diameter. Petals are narrow, about 4.5-5 cm long and about 0.5 cm wide. Lip is triple, brown with lighter veins from the outer part and on the tip, about 4.5 cm in length and 3 cm in width, inside has two wide and one narrow outgrowth. The column is curved, about 3.5 cm in length and 0.7 cm in width.

COELOGYNE USITANA ORCHID PLANT CARE AND CULTURE

Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.

Light:

Coelogyne usitana loves bright sunlight and is able to tolerate the direct morning and evening sun, however, in the hot summer noon (especially on the windows of the southern orientation), the orchid should be protected from direct sunlight: put behind a curtain (for example, on a table near the window) or in the shade of other plants, otherwise the plant can get sunburn.

Temperature:

This type of orchid refers to a moderately warm temperature regime, and throughout the year the plants are recommended to contain under the following conditions: Day temperature at 20-35 ° C; Night temperature is not less than 15 ° C. For the successful cultivation at home, it is necessary that the night temperature of the content is always 4-5 ° C lower than the daytime temperature.

Humidity:

In the natural habitat, the relative humidity of air rarely falls below 55-60%. In conditions of high humidity, it is necessary to regularly ventilate the room where the plants are kept, since wet, stale air is an ideal medium for the mass reproduction of various fungal and bacterial diseases.

Substrate, growing media and repotting:

Coelogyne usitana is usually grow in hanging plastic pots or wooden trellised baskets. As a substrate, you can use pure moss sphagnum, a mixture of bark of coniferous trees with moss sphagnum and charcoal.

Repotting is desirable only when it is really necessary, for example, in cases of severe salinization or condensation of the substrate, at its critically high or low pH (the norm is from 5, 5 to 6,5) or, when the plant grows very much and the pot becomes narrow (the pseudobulbs begin to hang from the edges of the pot). The best time for transplant is the period immediately after the flowering.

Watering:

The frequency and abundance of watering the orchids of this species directly depends on the overall temperature of the content and intensity of the illumination, the higher they are, the more often and abundant it is necessary to water. In doing so, it must be remembered that excess water during watering should flow freely out of the pot, as the stagnation of water both inside the pot and in its pallet can very quickly lead to rotting of the roots and the lower part of the plant. The substrate between waterings should dry relatively well, but do not dry out completely, i.e. is always in a slightly moistened, but not wet state.

Fertilizer:

During active growth, this type of orchids is fertilized every 2-3 weeks in the usual concentration of fertilizer indicated on the package. In addition to root top dressing, it is also recommended to produce a foliar dressing when the outer part of the plant is sprayed with a very diluted fertilizer. It is best to feed the orchid, alternating both these methods. The best fertilizer is fertilizer containing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in equal parts, for example, NPK = 3-3-3 or 8-8-8. If you do not have such fertilizer, then at the beginning of the growing season (the emergence of new shoots), feed the orchid with a fertilizer with a high content of phosphorus, and when the sprout reaches 1/2 of its normal growth - fertilizer with a higher nitrogen content.

Rest period:

Coelogyne usitana does not needs any rest period: neither for stimulation of flowering, nor for winter rest, the orchid is able all year round either to grow or to blossom.
