Aronia melanocarpa Autumn Magic is a nice improvement to a North American shrub that is called the black chokeberry. More compact, more bushy and more brilliantly colored in autumn , this variety offers a lovely spring bloom in the form of white and fragrant bouquets that will give black, shiny and edible fruits whose flavor, superior to that of the wild species, recalls that blackcurrant. It is at the end of the season that we will appreciate most this Aronia in festive dress: crowned with orange and purplish red, it is adorned with generous black bunches hanging on red petioles. The shrub is as ornamental as it is easy to grow in ordinary soil, at a sunny exposure to accentuate its colors.

Aronia melanocarpa Autumn Magic details:

Coming from Canada and the northeastern United States, Aronia macrocarpa is a distant cousin of roses, plum trees and brambles, a member of the huge Rosaceae family. 'Autumn Magic' has been selected and tested in Canada for its superior ornamental qualities, compactness and superior fruit fructification.

This beautiful shrub 1.50 m in all directions shows a fairly slow growth, has dense vegetation and foliage smaller than the type. Its bark is smooth, reddish brown. It has deciduous , alternate, simple, oval, finely toothed, 4 to 5 cm long, dark-green, satin leaves that truly blaze in autumn, adopting different shades of orange, copper, crimson red to purplish.

In April-May appear white flowers spotted pale pink , 2cm in diameter. Collected in corymbs, they are very numerous, very perfumed and very melliferous. They give way to bunches of purple-green round fruits that turn black-purple and shiny while their peduncles turn red. This fruiting, edible, slightly sour flavor but rich in anti-oxidants, persists long enough in winter if it is not consumed by birds.

Naturally very resistant to diseases and pests, Aronia melanocarpa Autumn Magic is an excellent free-growing shrub that is both rustic, ornamental and undemanding. If it tolerates the presence of limestone and accommodates ungrateful soils, it will only reach its full extent in fresh, deep, slightly acid soil. It finds its place in isolated, in a free hedge, country or hedgerow as well as in large masses of shrubs.

For a dramatic mass effect, plant it in groups of 3 to 6 subjects of the same variety. This Aronia is associated in a hedge that is both beautiful and greedy to other shrubs small fruits, foliage or flowers such as apple, plum and cherry orchards, deciduous viburnum... The fruits of the Aronia Autumn Magic are eaten fresh, cooked, in jam or in juice that is mixed for example with Cranberry juice and apple juice.

Grow and care Aronia melanocarpa Autumn Magic:

Aronia melanocarpa Autumn Magic is best planted in early spring or early autumn in any good garden soil. If it is very tolerant, it prefers deep soils, fresh, light and slightly acidic. Plant it in a sunny, never-burning, or half-shaded situation. In the shade and in calcareous soil, the colors are duller. The hardiness of this Canadian shrub is excellent, even in moist soil. Straw and water well. Cut all the branches halfway through the end of the winter. It is naturally very resistant to diseases and parasites.
