Vanda tessellata is native to Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka. They are growing on trees in dry and intermediate zones at elevations around 1500 meters.
Vanda tessellata also called as The Lattice-Like Patterned Flower Vanda, Aerides tessellatum, Cymbidium allagnata, Cymbidium tessellatum, Cymbidium tesselloides, Epidendrum tesselatum, Epidendrum tesseloides, Vanda roxburghii, Vanda roxburghii var. wrightiana, Vanda tesselloides, is a species of the genus Vanda. This species was described by William Jackson Hooker ex George Don in 1850.
IDENTIFY VANDA TESSELLATA
Vanda tessellata is native to Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka. They are growing on trees in dry and intermediate zones at elevations around 1500 meters. At Bodimettu on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border in Southern India, this species grows as a lithophytes in open sun. It has been collected from sparse scrub coastal habitats and is also found in scrub jungle and can form extensive masses on tree trunks. In Sri Lanka, in particular, it has a wide range of color variations. In Bangladesh, this orchid grows on the branches and trunks of the large host trees.
It is a medium to large sized, cool growing epiphyte, which reaching up to 1m in height, with a 30-60 cm long, climbing stem carrying linear, narrow, conduplicate, tridentate apically, 15-20 cm long leaves.
The Lattice-Like Patterned Flower Vanda blooms on a sub-erect, 15 to 50 cm long inflorescence carrying 5 to 12, fragrant, long-lived flowers occurring in the summer, fall and early winter. The flowers are 5 cm in diameter. Their color varies from light to dark brown with darker veins and pink, blue or purple lip. The sepals are yellow, tessellated with brown lines and with white margins. The petals are yellow with brown lines and white margins, shorter than the sepals.
VANDA TESSELLATA CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Vanda tessellata loves bright sunlight and is able to tolerate direct morning and evening sun, however, in the hot summer noon, this orchid should be protected from direct sunlight. During the whole year, the duration of a day of light must be at least 10 hours. When the leaves are yellow it means too much light. If dark green leaves its mean its lacking in light, its may not flower.
Temperature:
This kind of orchid refers to a moderately warm temperature regime, and it is recommended to keep the orchids under the following conditions throughout the year: day temperature should not higher than 32 ° C; night temperature should not below 16 ° C.
Humidity:
The Lattice-Like Patterned Flower Vanda needs relatively high humidity, not less than 60%, ideally 75-80%. Too dry air negatively affects the development of the plant: its growth is inhibited, and the roots begin to dry out. Strong air movement should be ensured.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
Thick and fleshy epiphytic roots of Vanda tessellata are very sensitive to prolonged waterlogging and require a large influx of fresh air (than the roots of some other species), therefore it is recommended to contain the plant without substrate in suspended state. In conditions of low air humidity, the plants can also be planted in suspended lattice baskets with a small fraction of a very breathable substrate based on large pieces of bark of coniferous trees, charcoal and large expanded clay.
Frequent repot for this type of orchids are not required, so repot is desirable only in cases of severe salinization or condensation of the substrate, a critically low PH. The best time for repotting is the spring period.
Watering:
To water the orchids growing without a substrate, it is desirable every morning or at least once in 2-3 days, guided by the general temperature of the content - in spring and summer more often, and in winter and autumn, less often. If they are grown in a substrate, then they should be watered only when the substrate completely dries, since the roots and stem of the orchids of this species are very sensitive to waterlogging and can very quickly rot away.
Fertilizer:
Throughout the year, this type of orchid is fertilized for each watering in 1/6 or 1/8 of the fertilizer concentration indicated on the package. To avoid very rapid salinization of the substrate, once every 3-4 months it needs to be washed well.
Rest period:
Vanda tessellata does not need any period of rest, neither for stimulation of flowering. In winter, the amount of water can be somewhat reduced, but the plant should not be dry for the long period. Whenever water is reduced, fertilization should also limited or completely abandoned when strong watering resumes in spring.
