IDENTIFY ODONTOGLOSSUM TENUE
Odontoglossum tenue is native to Ecuador and Peru. This orchid is found in small areas in the provinces of Loja and Zamora-Chinchipe in southern Ecuador and just abroad in northern Peru, near Huancabamba in the department of Piura. They grow on trees in the lighter places of mountain rainforests at heights of 2000-3000 m, but the largest amount was encountered at a height of about 2500 m.
It is a small sized, cold growing epiphyte, which reaching a height of 17 cm, with closely set, ovate, ancipitous, longitudinally rugose with age, 3 cm long and 1.5 cm wide at the base pseudobulbs partially enveloped basally by 4 to 5 distichous, imbricating, with the upper 2 being leaf-bearing sheaths and carrying 1 or 2, narrowly lanceolate, acute, conduplicate below into the long, narrow petiole-like base, up to 14 cm long and 1.5 cm wide leaves.
The Delicate Odontoglossum blooms in the summer on an axillary, erect, loosely 6 to 7 flowered, 20 cm long, racemose inflorescence arising on a recently matured pseudobulb. The flowers are up to 4.5 cm in diameter. The petals of both whorls are yellow-green, but almost entirely covered with red-brown spots. At the base of the inner leaflets, the spots are arranged in the shape of irregular lines or stripes. The ruffle is ivory-white with a wine-red area of the thickening and several spots scattered along the center of the middle plot, as well as a series of small spots arranged in a line that runs along the lip of the lip. The side lobes of the lip have red stripes and spots. The backbone is greenish with red-brown spots in the front.
ODONTOGLOSSUM TENUE CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Odontoglossum tenue needs a light level of 13000 to 22000 lux.
Temperature:
The average temperature of the day throughout the year is 20-22 ° C, night 9-11 ° C, giving a daily difference of 10-13 ° C.
Humidity:
The Delicate Odontoglossum needs the humidity of 80% for most of the year.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
A loose, fast-drying substrate is required. Odontoglossum tenue can also be grown on rootstocks, as long as we can provide high humidity.
Watering:
In the natural habitat, rainfall is very small throughout the year. The cultivated plants should be watered fairly abundantly during the growing season, but excellent drainage must be ensured so that the roots dry quickly after watering.
Fertilizer:
During the active growth of the plant should be fertilized every week 1/4-1/2 of the recommended dose of fertilizer for orchids.
Rest period:
From the end of autumn until spring, the amount of water should be reduced as long as the Odontoglossum tenue are not in the active phase of growth. This is especially important for the plants grown in the conditions of a short, dark day at moderate latitudes. However, the plants should never be dry for a longer period. It should be regularly misted early in the morning and occasionally lightly watered. Fertilization should be reduced or eliminated until spring, when regular watering is undertaken.
