Coilostylis parkinsoniana also called as Parkinson's Coilostylis, Brassavola pescatorii, Epidendrum aliofolium, Epidendrum falcatum var zeledoniae, Epidendrum parkinsonianum, is a species of the genus Coilostylis. This species was described by Withner & Harding in 2004.
IDENTIFY COILOSTYLIS PARKINSONIANA
Coilostylis parkinsoniana is native from southern Mexico through Central America to Panama. In Mexico, these plants are found in the states: Jalisco, Michoacan, Mexico, Morelos, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Veracruz, and Chiapas. It is occurring in a wide area, but rarely found epiphytic species, which normally grows in oak and pine forests at an altitude of 1500-2300 m above sea level.
It is a large sized, cool to cold, pendant growing, epiphytic species, which reaching a length of over 200 cm, with cylindrical, curved, 10 cm long pseudobulbs enveloped basally by a few scarious, tubular bracts carrying a single apical, pendulous, fleshy, narrowly lanceolate, entirely folded, up to 46 cm long leaf.
Parkinson's Coilostylis blooms at various times of the year on the apical, 5 cm long, racemose inflorescence arises from within the base of the folded leaf with 1 to 3, large, long-lasting, simultaneously opening, fragrant flowers arising from a newly forming pseudobulb. The flowers are may be over 15 cm in diameter, although they are usually slightly smaller. The long, narrow, significant span of the outer and inner whorls may be whitish, pale brown, pale yellow or yellowish green. They often have a light-violet shade, on the outside of the violet-brown petals. A large white lip, having a more or less distinguishable yellow or yellow-orange spot on the surface, is a three-flap; the middle part is sharp and longer than lateral.
COILOSTYLIS PARKINSONIANA CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Coilostylis parkinsoniana needs a light level of 20000-30000 lux. The light should be kept as high as possible, so as not to burn the leaves.
Temperature:
It is a thermophilic plant. The average summer temperature in the day 26-27 ° C at night, 13-14 ° C , with daily difference of 12-13 ° C . In spring, the average day temperature is 28-29 ° C , night 10 to 13 ° C , the difference of daily 16-17 ° C . The average winter temperature is 23-26 ° C at night, 7-8 ° C at night , with a daily difference of 16-17 ° C.
Humidity:
Parkinson's Coilostylis needs the humidity of 70-75% in summer and early autumn, decreasing in winter and at the beginning of spring to 55-60%.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
Due to the large, hanging and branching habit, Coilostylis parkinsoniana should be fixed on cork, bark or tree ferns. These plants grow well in hanging pots or baskets that have a very good drainage. The division can be done by cutting the rhizomes and planting these pieces, even if they have only one increment, on the boards, with the leaf pointing upwards.
Watering:
In the period from late spring to early autumn rainfall is moderate to heavy. This species should be damp, and between the next watering should only slightly dry out. When new growths reach maturity in the autumn, the amount of water should be gradually reduced.
Fertilizer:
During the period of strong growth, the plants should be fertilized every week with 1/4-1/2 of the recommended dose of fertilizer for orchids. A fertilizer with a high nitrogen content is beneficial from spring to mid-summer, and a fertilizer richer in phosphorus should be used in late summer and autumn.
Rest period:
During the 5-6 months from late autumn to early spring, you should gradually reduce the amount of water for Coilostylis parkinsoniana and allow the substrate to dry, but it should not be allowed to leave them for a long time with the dried soil. To prevent excessive drying, the plants should be sporadically sprinkled between watering. However, for 1-2 months in late winter and early spring, watering should be limited to occasional sprinklers. Watering should be increased when flowers begin to grow. Fertilization should be limited or should be completely abandoned until spring, when stronger watering resumes.
