IDENTIFY CATTLEYA ARAGUAIENSIS
Cattleya araguaiensis is native to Brazil. This orchid was first found in the state of Goias near the Araguaia River near Pium. They grow usually at heights of 400-600 m, in shade, on small branches, low on trees.
It is a small sized, warm growing epiphyte, which reaching a height of 15-20 cm, with slim, spindly, 5-7 cm long pseudobulbs and a single apical, 10 cm in length and 2.5 cm in width leaf.
The Araguaia Cattleya blooms in the late spring through mid summer on a terminal, short, single flowered inflorescence with a long-lasting flower. The flowers are 7-10 cm in diameter. The flakes of both whorls are greenish on the underside, but are almost completely covered with red-brown wisps, spots or stripes. The lip is white with a greenish-brown top that fades to the transverse red strip at the base of the apical plot. In addition, the central plot is purple-red to a red-brown spot, which extends from the base to almost half of the lip.
CATTLEYA ARAGUAIENSIS CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Cattleya araguaiensis needs a light level of 25000-30000 lux. Strong air movement should be ensured all the time, especially during flowering. In winter the light level should be the highest.
Temperature:
It is a thermophilic plant. Throughout the year, the average day temperature is 28-33 ° C, and the average night temperature is 17-20 ° C, with a daily amplitude of 8-10 ° C.
Humidity:
The Araguaia Cattleya needs the average humidity of 80-85% for most of the year, which in the dry season falls to 60-65%.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
Cattleya araguaiensis grow well mounted on rootstocks made of cork, tree fern or uneven bark, with high humidity ensured and watering at least once a day in the growing season. In the summer during hot, dry weather, it may be necessary to water several times a day. If the plants are grown in pots, the substrate must be very loose and quickly drain away excess water. Repotting or dividing the plants should be done only when the growth of new roots begins.
Watering:
These plants should be abundantly watered during active growth, but the roots must always dry quickly after watering. When new growths reach maturity in the autumn, the amount of water should be reduced. The flower buds are susceptible to fungal infections if the plant is kept too wet before flowering.
Fertilizer:
The plants should be fertilized every week 1/4-1/2 of the recommended dose of fertilizer for orchids. A fertilizer with a high nitrogen content is beneficial from spring to mid-summer, and a fertilizer richer in phosphorus should be used in late summer and autumn.
Rest period:
In winter, the nights should be cooler to increase the daily difference to 13-15 ° C, watering during this period should be limited, but the Cattleya araguaiensis must never be allowed to dry up completely or remain dry for more than a few days. Fertilization should be limited or should be completely abandoned until spring, when stronger watering resumes.
