Bulbophyllum dentiferum also called as The Toothed Bulbophyllum, Bulbophyllum cyclosepalon, Cirrhopetalum cyclosepalon, Cirrhopetalum dentiferum, is a species of the genus Bulbophyllum. This species was described by Henry Nicholas Ridley in 1915.
IDENTIFY BULBOPHYLLUM DENTIFERUM
Bulbophyllum dentiferum is native to Thailand and Malaysia. In Thailand, they are found near Satun, on the south-west coast near the border with Malaysia, at the height of 150-200 m from sea level.
It is a small sized, hot to warm growing, unifoliate, epiphytic species with woody rhizome, with the conic, 4 angled, bright green, 3.5 cm long and 1.5 cm wide pseudobulbs spaced apart by at least 8 to 14 cm and carries a single, apical, erect, fleshy, narrowly ovate, blunt-ended, up to 18 cm in length and 3 cm in width leaf that narrows below into a distinct 2.5 cm long, petiole at the base.
The Toothed Bulbophyllum blooms in the fall and winter on a 8 to 20 cm long, several flowered inflorescence with the flowers held in an umbel at the apex of the scape, all held above the leaves. The dorsal petal is greenish-yellow with scarlet dots and edges. The side outer petals are pale yellow with a darker base and have large, dark, purple spots on one-third of the surface from the inside. Their outer part is completely covered with pink-purple dots. The inner coat flakes are greenish-yellow with dark red spots, and the lip is pale-yellow and also has dark red spots.
BULBOPHYLLUM DENTIFERUM CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Bulbophyllum dentiferum needs a light level of 12000-20000 lux. The light should be filtered or dispersed, and the plants should not be exposed to direct sunlight in the afternoon hours. Strong air movement should be ensured all the time.
Temperature:
It is a thermophilic plant. The average day temperature during the whole year is 28-31 ° C, night 19-21 ° C, which gives a daily amplitude of 8-12 ° C.
Humidity:
The Toothed Bulbophyllum needs the humidity of about 80% for most of the year, increases to about 85% over a period of several autumn months, and then drops to 65-70% at the end of winter and early spring.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
The propagating and creeping habit of Bulbophyllum dentiferum suggest even fixing the plant on a cork or tree fern, but it can be done on condition that the air humidity is high and in the summer we can provide the plant with daily watering. In the case of such suspended plants, during the dry and hot periods it may be necessary to water several times a day.
If the plants are planted in pots, shallow bowls or pots on azaleas are recommended. The lower half of the container should be filled with a very loose drainage material, such as thick or medium pieces of bark or cork. The upper half should be filled with a fine substrate made of bark or chopped woody fern fibers that will keep the moisture, but will not get wet.
Repotting is best performed after flowering, especially when new roots start growing. This allows the plants to quickly root themselves, preventing weakness.
Watering:
For most of the year, rainfall is very abundant, but in the winter their amount is slightly smaller. However, there is no long dry season. The cultivated plants should be abundantly watered during active growth, but the substrate should not be allowed to decompose or become damp. In the autumn, after reaching new maturity, you can reduce the amount of water, but the plants can not completely dry up.
Fertilizer:
During the active growth, the plants should be fertilized every week 1/4-1/2 of the recommended dose of fertilizer for orchids. You can use balanced fertilizer throughout the year, but you can also use fertilizer with increased nitrogen content from spring to mid summer, and then in the late summer and autumn, use a fertilizer with a higher content of phosphorus.
Rest period:
In winter, the amount of water should be slightly reduced, especially if Bulbophyllum dentiferum are grown under dark, short days, which occurs at moderate latitudes. However, these plants should never be dried. Fertilization should be reduced or completely eliminated until more intense watering starts in the spring.
