Renanthera imschootiana is native to Northeast India, Vietnam and probably Myanmar. In India, these plants meet in the Manipur region, at an altitude of 1000-1500 m. In Vietnam, the plants were met in several places, from Hue to the south, especially near Dalat, and in other locations in the Langbian region.

Renanthera imschootiana care and culture

It is a medium to large sized, warm to cool growing epiphyte, which reaching a height of 90 cm, with a long, liana-like, branched, up to 90 cm long and 0.5 cm thick stem becoming woody with age and carrying many, linear, leathery, truncately rounded, bilobed apically, 8-10 cm long and 1.8-2.0 cm wide leaves.

Imschoot's Renanthera blooms in the late spring and early summer on a 45 cm long, axillary, branched or racemose, loosely many flowered inflorescence with semi orbicular floral bracts and long-lasting, slightly fruity scented flowers. The flowers are 4.5-5.5 cm long from the tip of the dorsal leaf to the lateral ends of the outer whorls. The outer whorls are bright red to orange with a small amount of yellow at the base. The inner whorl flakes are yellow with red spots. The lip and the spine are red. Its lateral lobes are triangular, pointed, with auriform outgrowth at the base. The middle part of the lip is rounded, concave, with seven yellow crests and a short spur. The column is red.

RENANTHERA IMSCHOOTIANA CARE AND CULTURE

Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.

Light:

Renanthera imschootiana needs a light level of 40000-50000 lux. The light should be very bright, but it will be beneficial to filter the sun at noon. Strong air movement should be ensured all the time.

Temperature:

It is a thermophilic plant, but requiring a cooler resting period. In summer, the average day temperature is 26 ° C, at 18-19 ° C at night, with a daily amplitude of 7-8 ° C. The average winter temperature is on day 19-20, at night 2-5 ° C, daily difference 15-17 ° C.

Humidity:

Imschoot's Renanthera need the humidity of 80-85% for most of the year, the autumn it falls to 75% and then further decreases to almost 50% for 1-2 months of late winter and the beginning of spring.

Substrate, growing media and repotting:

Renanthera imschootiana can be grow in hanging pots or slatted baskets, filled with loose, coarse-grained, quickly drying substrate. Sometimes, these plants are grown with only a small amount of airy substrate, such as charcoal, wine corks or large pieces of bark of cork oak, so that only keep the plants in the right position and allow rooting. The roots should be allowed to grow, sag, and not be cut to give the plant an orderly appearance. Even slight cutting of the roots (beyond the necessary minimum resulting from their drying or damage due to putrefaction) moves the plant back a few years. The continuous and strong air movement around the roots is very important for proper growth.

Watering:

From spring to early autumn, the rainfall is moderate to heavy, and during the 3 winter months very low. In summer and early autumn, the cultivated plants should be watered abundantly. The substrate around the roots can never be desiccated or soggy. In the autumn, watering should be gradually reduced.

Fertilizer:

During the active growth, the plants should be fertilized every week 1/4-1/2 of the recommended dose of fertilizer for orchids. You can use sustainable fertilizers throughout the year, but you can also use fertilizer with an increased nitrogen content from spring to mid-summer, and then, in late summer and autumn, fertilizer enriched with phosphorus.

Rest period:

During the period of 1-2 winter months, Renanthera imschootiana should be kept drier with occasional fogging only. However, the amount of water supplied should be increased if the plants start showing signs of weakness. Fertilization should be eliminated until new growths appear and more watering begins in the spring. Such a cool, dry resting period is necessary to induce flowering.
