Dendrobium crispilinguum is native to Papua New Guinea, including the area of the West Foothills, Chimbu, the Eastern Foothills and the Provinces of Enga and Morobe. This plants occur in mountain rain forests at heights of 1100-1600 m, but in the Province of Enga they are even found at an altitude of 1800 m.
Dendrobium crispilinguum, also called as The Curled Lip Dendrobium, Durabaculum crispilinguum, is a species of the genus Dendrobium. This species was described by Phillip James Cribb in 1980.
IDENTIFY DENDROBIUM CRISPILINGUUM
Dendrobium crispilinguum is native to Papua New Guinea, including the area of the West Foothills, Chimbu, the Eastern Foothills and the Provinces of Enga and Morobe. This plants occur in mountain rain forests at heights of 1100-1600 m, but in the Province of Enga they are even found at an altitude of 1800 m.
It is a large to giant sized, cool growing epiphyte, which reaching 90-200 cm in height, with slender, cane-like, basally swollen, usually 90 cm long, rarely 200 cm stems that turn orange when dry and carrying 8 to 10, ovate-lanceolate, leathery, suberect, 8-13 cm long leaves.
The Curled Lip Dendrobium blooms in the late summer and fall on numerous, suberect to spreading, 18 to 20 flowered inflorescence arising through the leaf bases of the apical nodes. The flowers are 4 cm in diameter. The petals of both whorls are cream, yellowish, or greenish white. The inner whorl flakes are twisted 1-3 times. The lip is white or greenish and heavily suffused with lilac or purple. The lip midlobe is wavy and ruffled along the margin with 5 ridges on the callus. The 3-lobed lip is not recurved.
DENDROBIUM CRISPILINGUUM CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Dendrobium crispilinguum needs a light level of 25000-30000 lux.
Temperature:
It is a thermophilic plant. Throughout the year, the average day temperatures are 25-27 ° C, average night temperatures 14-17 ° C, with an amplitude of daily fluctuations of 10-12 ° C.
Humidity:
The Curled Lip Dendrobium needs a humidity of 70-75% in summer and autumn, decreasing to 65-70% in winter and in spring. This Dendrobium needs strong ventilation. The constant movement of air around the roots is important for growing a healthy plant.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
Dendrobium crispilinguum grow well attached to pieces of tree ferns or cork, as long as you can provide them with high humidity, but during the summer it requires daily watering. If the plants are grown in pots, any loose, fast-drying substrate can be used. Repotting is best done in early spring, when the growth of new roots begins.
Watering:
Water is moderate and even abundant for almost a whole year, with a 3-month slightly drier winter period. The substrate of cultivated plants should be moist, but not soaked. Occasional morning spraying is very beneficial, especially in the period of bright, sunny weather.
Fertilizer:
Dendrobium crispilinguum should be fertilized every week 1/4-1/2 of the recommended dose of fertilizer for orchids. It should be fertilized throughout the year (once a week or once every two weeks), using a balanced fertilizer.
Rest period:
Watering in winter should be reduced to some extent, especially in the case of plants grown in the conditions of a short, darker day, typical of higher latitudes. In such conditions, Dendrobium crispilinguum should be slightly dried out, but they can never be completely dry.
