IDENTIFY BULBOPHYLLUM AGASTOR
Bulbophyllum agastor is native to Papua New Guinea. This orchid was discovered in the Southern Highland province near Mendi. It grew as an epiphyte at an altitude of 1580 m.
It is a cool growing, unifoliate epiphyte, up to 19 cm tall. The leaves are 17 cm long and 4 cm wide. A single longitudinal-elliptic leaf grows on the top of the pseudobulb. It has a blunt tip and the base is narrowed, short and folded along.
The Near Kinsman Bulbophyllum blooms on a short, fasciculate, few flowered inflorescence that holds the flowers below the leaves up against the pseudobulb. The flowers are very fleshy, which open to a small extent, about 2.5 cm long. They are white with a marble pattern from chestnut to dark purple, with a reddish orange circle on the lip. The upper sepal shape resembles a hood, it is slightly rounded and concave. The lateral sepals are joined along the inner edges almost from the base to the apex. The petals are narrow at the base, widen to the middle of their length, and then sharply narrow, forming a sharp tip. The edges of the petals are wavy. The lip is triangular to narrow-heart-shaped.
BULBOPHYLLUM AGASTOR CARE AND CULTURE
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
Bulbophyllum agastor needs a light level of 15000-23000 lux. Light should be filtered or scattered, these orchids can not be exposed to direct sunlight. A constant ventilation is necessary.
Temperature:
The plant is moderately thermophilic. Throughout the year the average day temperature is 22-24 ° C, night 12-14 ° C, with a daily amplitude of 10-12 ° C.
Humidity:
Bulbophyllum agastor needs an average humidity of around 80% throughout the year.
Substrate, growing media and repotting:
These plants are usually grown in shallow pots or baskets using a loose, fast-drying substrate such as perlite or chopped sphagnum moss mixed with fine or medium granulation bark or tree fern fiber because they require excellent drainage and airy substrate around the roots.
If the substrate is not spread, but Bulbophyllum agastor has grown out of the container, it can be repotted with the whole substrate to a larger basket or pot without disturbing the roots. If repotting is necessary, it is best to do it when new roots begin to grow, because then the plant will stabilize faster. However, they should be repotted immediately if the substrate is spread out before it becomes stale and will remain soggy.
Watering:
The precipitation is moderate to abundant throughout the year. The plants should be constantly moist, only drying a little between waterings.
Fertilizer:
It is recommended to use 1 / 4-1 / 2 of the recommended dose of orchid fertilizer in the growing season. You can use fertilizer with a high nitrogen content from spring to mid-summer, and then fertilizer with high phosphorus content until the end of autumn.
Rest period:
In the conditions of a short, dark day, the amount of water in winter should be slightly reduced. When reducing the amount of water, fertilization should be reduced or eliminated.
