Phalaenopsis amboinensis orchid, also called as The Amboin Island Phalaenopsis, Phalaenopsis amboinensis f. flavida, Phalaenopsis amboinensis var. flavida, Phalaenopsis hombronii, Phalaenopsis psilantha, Polychilos amboinensis, is a species of the genus Phalaenopsis. This species was described by J.J.Smith in 1911.
IDENTIFY PHALAENOPSIS AMBOINENSIS ORCHID
The Amboin Island Phalaenopsis is native to the island of Ambon, as well as the Toli-Toli District on Sulawesi, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. It grows in the shade on the trees in the damp woods at an altitude of 0-400 meters.
This Phalaenopsis species is a small sized, hot growing, epiphytic species with to 4, elliptic to oblong-elliptic or oblanceolate leaves. The leaves are 25 cm long.
Phalaenopsis amboinensis blooms on a lateral, arching, 18" (45 cm) long, racemose or paniculate many flowered inflorescence with small bracts occuring in the late winter and early spring with long-lasting flowers. A single flower is 5-8 cm in diameter. The petals of both whorls are slightly cup-shaped and have quite sharp tops, but usually they are wide enough to overlap at the base. The flowers are creamy, pale lemon-yellow or orange-yellow and have red-brown stripes. The lip is small.
GROW AND CARE PHALAENOPSIS AMBOINENSIS ORCHID
Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.
Light:
This species grows well below average light level: 10000-12000 lux are fine. Morning light is recommended. If the light is too weak or the photoperiod is too short (at least 10 hours of light a day are needed), the orchid stops its growth.
Temperature:
The average summer temperature is 31-32 ° C, night 22-23 ° C, giving a daily difference of 8-9 ° C, but during the year this temperature changes only by 1 ° C. The average temperature of the winter day is 29-30 ° C, at night 22-23 ° C, giving a daily difference of 7 ° C.
Humidity:
If the Phalaenopsis amboinensis is placed in a pot, the air humidity may be 60-65%. If it is bare root, it needs at 75-85%.
Substrate and growing media:
Like all Phalaenopsis, this species does not like to be placed outdoors, because it prefers the most stable climates. A mixture of 12-16 mm bark with moisture retaining additives or sphagnum with perlite or charcoal added to improve breathability.
Watering:
Plants should always be very moist during the growing season. Hot water with a temperature of about 21 ° C is recommended for watering. The precipitation pattern is wet / dry, and the driest period is at the end of summer. The Phalaenopsis amboinensis gets water as soon as the substrate has dried and all the roots inside the vase have taken on the silver color. It is important to observe the color to understand when it is the right time to watering. The watering is done in the morning to allow the plant to dry before evening. It is important to remove excess water from the center of the stem and from the axils of the leaves to avoid rotting.
Fertilizer:
It is recommended that 1/4-1/2 doses of fertilizer for orchids applied every week or every 2 weeks in the growing season. Before fertilizing the plant it is important to water it to avoid the harmful effect of the fertilizer on the dry roots.
Rest period and repotting:
In winter, the amount of water should be reduced only when the temperature is low, while the fertilization should be reduced when the plants do not grow actively.
Plants are best repotted after flowering or when new roots begin to grow. The repotting is carried out every 2-3 years, to replace the old substrate. If root problems are detected, repotting is carried out immediately.
