Grow and care Paphiopedilum parishii orchid - Parish's Paphiopedilum

Parish's Paphiopedilum is native to Burma and Thailand. These plants are found in Burma in the Shan Upland region at an altitude of 1250-1370 m and in the mountains of western and northern Thailand. Paphiopedilum parishii usually grows on the slopes of the eastern exhibition, in the shade, with a low level of light. It grows epiphytically on the middle or lower branches of trees, 3-5 m above the ground, but also grows in thick mosses on boulders or on the roots of tree ferns.

Paphiopedilum parishii orchid, also called as Parish's Paphiopedilum, Cordula parishii, Cypripedium parishii, Selenipedium parishii is a species of the genus Paphiopedilum. This species was named after the famous British missionary and botanist Charles Parish, and was described by (Rchb.f) Stein in 1894.

This species is a medium sized, cool to cold growing epiphytic and sometimes terrestrial species. It has oblong-ligulate, leathery, clear green, bifid apically leaves. The leaves are up to 45 cm long and 4.0-7,5 cm wide.

It flowers in the winter with a sub-erect, terminal, pale green, pubescent, to 2' (60 cm) long, multiflowered inflorescence that has ovate, inflated bracts that cover 1/2 to 3/4 of the ovary. The flowers are up to 17 cm high and 12 cm in diameter. The dorsal petal is pale yellow with longitudinal green veins, and the lower petal (synsepalum) is similar in colors to the dorsal leaflet. The inner whorls are green at the base with a few scattered black spots, but on the upper half they gradually become blackish purple with pale flecks. The lip is intensely green, saturated with a brownish purple. Its side plots are intensely green and often have brownish-purple spots. The pollen chamber plate is yellow with a green marbled pattern.

Cultural information should only be used as a guide, and should be to be adapted to suit you. Your physical location; where you grow your plants, how much time you have to devote to their care, and many other factors, will need to be taken into account. Only then can you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants.

Light:

This species needs light level of 12,000-18000 lux. Strong air movement should be ensured all the time. Some breeders from England say that they grow these plants successfully at a much higher level of light.

Temperature:

The plant is moderately thermophilic. In summer, the average day temperature is 26-28 ° C, the night 19 ° C, which gives a daily difference of 7-9 ° C. In winter, the average day temperatures are 21.7-23.9 ° C, and at night 7.2-8.2 ° C, with an amplitude of 8.2-10.4 ° C.

Humidity:

70-80% humidity during the growing season, but at the end of the dry season, for 2-3 months at the end of winter and at the beginning of spring falls to 45-50%.

Substrate and growing media:

Paphiopedilum parishii orchid is a large plant with thick fleshy leaves, so it should be planted in heavy shallow pots with a wide bottom. A light pot under the weight of a plant can turn over. The substrate must be loose, it is good to hold water and keep part of the moisture, without soaking it. English growers successfully grow this species in baskets with a substrate consisting of moss, rhizomes of osmund fern and charcoal. To prevent the accumulation of mineral salts, the substrate should be periodically rinsed.

Watering:

From spring to early autumn, the plant should be watered abundantly, the substrate should only dry slightly between waterings. It is necessary to pay attention to the fact that it does not crawl and not soaked. In autumn, watering should be reduced.

Fertilizer:

Parish's Paphiopedilum once a week needs to feed 1/10-1/4 of the recommended dose of fertilizer for orchids. During the period of active growth it is possible to introduce fertilizer with a high nitrogen content, and at the end of the summer switch to a fertilizer with high phosphorus content. A low amount of nitrogen and high phosphorus favorably influences the flowering of the orchid and helps young growths ripen before winter.

Rest period and repotting:

For most of the winter, the substrate of the plant should dry out between waterings, but not stay dry for too long. And at the end of winter and early spring for 1-2 months, watering is reduced so that the substrate will remain dry longer. In most regions it is enough to spray the plant from time to time in the intervals between rare watering. Fertilization is stopped until the spring, when abundant watering resumes. This plant for flowering needs a dry and cold wintering, but it should not be as long and harsh as in nature. The plant blooms even after an easy period of rest.

Plants will grow better if we repot them every year before the substrate begins to decompose. They are repotted usually at the end of winter or at the beginning of spring. If they bloom in this period, they are repotted immediately after flowering.
