Dendrobium secundum orchid - Toothbrush orchid is a species of flowering plant in the family Orchidaceae and in the Dendrobium genus.

 Dendrobium secundum orchid - Toothbrush orchid is a species of flowering plant in the family Orchidaceae and in the Dendrobium genus. The common name refers to the fact that all the flowers are on the same side of the stem, much like the bristles all on one side of a toothbrush.

 It is native to Southeast Asia, including Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Thailand, Philippines, Peninsular Malaysia, Java, Borneo, Sumatra, Sulawesi, Indo-China and Lesser Sunda Islands. Several synonyms are known for this species such as Pedilonum secundum Blume, Dendrobium bursigerum Lindl, Dendrobium heterostigma Rchb.f, Dendrobium secundum var. niveum Rchb.f, Callista bursigera (Lindl.). Kuntze, Callista secunda (Blume) Kuntze, Dendrobium secundum f. album Valmayor & D. Tiu, Pedilonum bursigerum (Lindl.) Rauschert.

IDENTIFY DENDROBIUM SECUNDUM ORCHID

 This semi-pendulous, medium to large sized, hot to warm growing, cane-like species is found in semi-deciduous and deciduous dry lowland forests and savana-like hill woodlands at elevations of sea level to 700 meters with erect or semipendulous, stout, tapering at both ends, sulcate stems with oblong to oblong-lanceolate, persistent, unequally bilobed apically leaves that bloom in the late summer through late spring on last years mature pseudobulb with the 5" (12.5 cm) long inflorescence arising from near the apex of the leafless canes with many (50), waxy, glossy, fragrant flowers that do not open well.

 The Dendrobium secundum is an epiphytic species with pseudobulbs up to about 50 - 70 cm of length, grows in clusters of many pseudobulbs over the years. The stem is divided into multiple internodes, each internode has a leaf. The young stem usually have a green or white coat, the old stem often gray ash or gray.

 Leaves of Dendrobium secundum orchid are single leaves, growing sparsely and alternate on the pseudobulb, with 10-14 cm long, 3-5 cm wide. Leaves have parallel veins, divide the nose into two parts: one small side and one big side.

 The stalk of Toothbrush orchid is about 10-13 cm long, growing near the tops of stem that have been shed since the previous year. The flower grows in the axillary leaves, consist of 5 colonies and a large lip forming a deep throat containing nectar.

 The flower is 1,6 cm long and 0,6 cm broad, waxy, of colour going from the pale pink to the purple, rarely white, with orange labellum at the apex, which remain semi-closed. There are about 50 flowers in the same stalk, all pointing towards the same direction, not hatched but fragrant. Flowers bloom in early spring until late summer, last 2-3 weeks and are slightly scented.

 It reproduces by seed, in vitro, by micropropagation and by division, with each section provided with 3-4 pseudobulbs.

GROW AND CARE DENDROBIUM SECUNDUM ORCHID - TOOTHBRUSH ORCHID

 Little cultivated species at amateur level, it requires, during the vegetative period, high temperatures, humidity and luminosity, with regular waterings, but leaving the compost to dry up, if in pot, before giving water again, upon growth completion, to observe a dry period in winter, with slightly cooler temperatures, in order to have the flowering till the coming of the new vegetation; a constant, good, ventilation is fundamental.

New Dendrobium secundum orchid treatment techniques:

 Newly purchased plants should be left in a dry place, followed by pruning and cleaning of the damaged roots, leave only 1-2cm at the rhizome, remove the yellow leaves, dry stems and sick parts. Then hang backward in the next 5 days to let the plant heal the wounds. Finally we do soaking multi-function medicine for plants in 5 minutes, picking out and hanging back in a day.

Growing and caring for Dendrobium secundum orchid:

 After finishing treatment, the orchid is planted in pots so that the amount of cultivate does not exceed 1/4 of the height of the pot, place the orchid neatly on the surface of the growing cultivate. Forcing the orchid to fix the rootstock, the root must be fixed less shaken, to facilitate the best root can grasp the cultivate immediately.

After finishing planting, we provide Toothbrush orchid care according to the following regimes:

 Irrigation: We water every 3 days, irrigate with 5 liters of water per 12 pots, irrigation is divided into small irrigation, repeated, slow irrigation, time for irrigate is at least 5 minutes. Slow and repeated irrigation helps the water soak into the growing cultivate.

 Fertilizer regime: The period from April to October of each year is the period of orchid growing more branches and strong growth, so this period should be taken care with high protein nutrition to grow fast, strong, healthy to prepare the best for the flowering process.

 From April to October, fertilizers mixed with the following formula: (0.1-0.3g NPK 30-10-10 + 2ml B1 + 0.1-0.3g N3M) / 2.5lit water. Spray all plants, leaves (both upper and lower) at 8 am, periodically every 7 days.

 Disease prevention: Due to frequent environmental diseases, orchid insect pests, we regularly spray disease prevention and timely treatment for the plant to ensure that it does not affect the plant. Periodically spray every 15 days with a drug mixture of Antracol + Aliette + Ridomil gold + Regan / (dose as directed on the package).

 Note: We do not water during the period from October to March of next year because this is the time of rest of the plant, when we guarantee the care as above, the Dendrobium secundum orchid will flowering. Good luck!
