IDENTIFY DENDROBIUM AMABILE

Plant have large pseudobulb, different from Dendrobium farmeri with square stem, Dendrobium amabile have rounded stem with brown or dark green color; length from 40-100 cm, alternate leaves from the middle to the top of the stem. The plant is also called with names such as Callista amabilis Lour (1790), Epidendrum callista Raeusch (1797), Dendrobium bronckartii De Wild (1906), Dendrobium amabile (Lour) O'Brien (1909). Flowers are not last long, only about 5-10 days, but the flowers have large cluster form, bright and highlight colors, especially when the sun shines into the flower bunch it feels very bright glow. Due to the characteristics of different regions, the petals of this plant are white or purple.

Dendrobium amabile have hard, rounded, dark blue stems, usually 30-80 cm long. Along the stem are many small grooves; the leaves are very thick, dark blue and good all year round, the leaves are about 10-12 cm long, 6-8 cm wide, this species does not have a rest season, so it is less leafy in winter. Flowers grow into cluster and have 20-25 cm long from near the top, flowers cluster diameter about 10 cm including many single flowers. Flowers are light pink, peduncle and ovule are 4 - 5 cm long. The leaves are pointed, slightly pointed tip, 2.8 - 3 cm long, 1.4 - 1.6 cm wide. The petals are oval shaped, with a rounded top, 3 - 3.2 cm long, 1.9 - 2 cm wide. The lips are round, long and wide about 2.6 to 2.8 cm, with white edges, the middle is an orange spot. The flower blooms in the summer between late May and mid-June, the smell of sweet scent.

Plants prefer moist environments, and by the time the plants grow more roots, we need to put in places where there are many suns, the plants will have more flowers. Plants are both potted and woody, fairly easy to grow, roots grow quickly and much. Dendrobium amabile are not defoliate to flowering, so if you stop watering, it does not stop completely because it also need to feed leaves.

GROW AND CARE DENDROBIUM AMABILE

Because Dendrobium amabile does not have a rest season but grows the most in spring - summer, so the best time to graft plants is this season. It is best to choose bushes with many mature pseudobulbs, not too old nor too young.

The cultivate should be longan, cainito logs or or hardwoods with thick hulls or strong, fresh, with no deer, no decay driftwood. Not necessarily, but if you can soak the cultivate in the lime water for about half - 1 day before the graft, the better.

I usually treat and graft the plants quite fast and simple, just nearly like the instructions is okay. Once the new plants are purchased, cut roots 3-5 centimeters away from the rhizome, flush clean water, soak the whole plant with Atonik solution or B1 or N3M (add a few drops of antifungal agent as Ridomil is good) for 1-2 hours and then pick up to graft. After finishing, should avoid rain, hanging in the shade, daily irrigation or spray the entire plant 1-2 times depending on the environment dry or humid, more or less wind; if it's dry, plant can be irrigated, once a week we spray again B1 or Atonik to stimulate roots.

Dendrobium amabile have a strong root, the pseudobulb can store water, so it is easy to care but the roots must be breathable, the plant often die of excess water, not die of water shortage. Therefore, it is necessary to regularly check the cultivate, if it is still moist and cool, then do not irrigate, only irrigation when completely dry.

This species can tolerate sunlight quite good, about 70-80%, but this plant do not like the erratic weather, new grafted plants should avoid rain to prevent rotten tops.

Before the flowering season about 1 month we water less but still spray NPK 10-30-10 once a week to stimulate the flowers, and at the same time we put the plant out in a lot of sunshine. If you water plenty of water or plants are lacking of sunlight at this time, the plants will not flower but only new stem.

After the flowering season, Dendrobium amabile have need of water more and this time it is also very hot, we bring it back to a place with less sunshine, more irrigation, fertilizer NPK 30-10-10 weekly to support the growth of the new stem.
